E-Books Outsold Paper on Amazon for Christmas

Amazon announced that it sold more e-books this Christmas than it did the paper variety, a first in its history.

In an interview this month with The New York Times, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos predicted the sea-change, stating, "It won't be too long before we're selling more electronic books than physical books."

On Christmas day, at least, that vision came true. But there's a certain logic to the finding that e-books outsold paper ones on Christmas. If, as Amazon claims, the Kindle was its biggest gift this holiday season, then it stands to reason that a person receiving a Kindle would be tempted to download e-books to give the device a trial run.

eBook Tip: Betting too heavily on discount pricing.

Increased competition and dollar-conscious buyers make many retailers assume that discounting is the way to ring up holiday cheer. But cutting prices, especially early in the season, only cannibalizes year-round sales as customers wait to buy. Discounting also eats into holiday profits.

Instead, during the holidays try to turn customer service into your competitive asset. Customer service has become so poor that people are actually surprised when they find good service. That's an opportunity for smaller retailers.

Simon Sinek, a strategic marketing consultant based in New York, suggests retailers market a shopping experience. "Instead of having people approach holiday shopping with dread because of the long lines and lots of dough, turn it in a fun experience," he says. Remind your customer why its better to shop online... no long lines, no traffic, better customer service, and don’t be afraid to hype your eBook products (and eBook readers like the Amazon Kindle).

eBooks Are A HOT - HOT - HOT Holiday Item!

Here’s why:

You get your eBooks immediately rather than having to wait in long lines, or even having to wait for the book to arrive in the mail. You don’t have to pay for shipping.

eBooks don’t require any paper, thereby saving trees and protecting the environment; with your computer or Kindle, eBooks provide a “green way” to read. It doesn’t cost any money to print eBooks and you don’t have to pay for postage since eBooks can be sent via email or wirelessly to your Kindle.

Downloading eBooks onto a Kindle allows you to take your entire library with you any place, at any time! It would be nearly impossible to carry your entire collection of physical books with you everywhere you go— The Kindle is equipped to hold about 200 books and is capable of storing more than 4,000 eBooks at your fingertips.

The Amazon Kindle is also being tested in colleges across the country as a way to replace heavy textbooks.

eBooks are digital so they’re cheaper than regular books, and they take up less space than physical books.
